Slick's Notes from Conference film

22 Nov 2023 by Jessica Schlichtemeier

Here are my notes from Monday. I broke this down by actor. If you don’t see your name, nothing to change unless you are getting new blocking on Monday. These are all very little things to polish for Monday’s rehearsal.

Piper: look for something to be thankful for before you find the cat. The emphasis on “that” trashcan seemed off to me this time, maybe dial that back a little. When you steal the broom, really trust it back when Dani addresses you. During Mistress Mary you will have to be the one to turn on the eyes for Hannah’s evil laugh. Be careful of getting too screechy on a few lines (it’s the two where you recount what has happened – we lived with Uncle Scrooge, you became a princess…). On the freeze, I know this will be hard but try not to blink. You freeze every part of your body even your eyes.

Dani – Make sure Begeloits is open to the audience – her hair really blocks her face. prayer scene: pick up Begeloits when you say “And thank you for Begeloits” so you are ready to hit the button when she calls to you. Not sure the yelling in the trash can on “I would love to tell him” works for me. This is one of those places where I feel like we are trying to force a laugh and I want them to come natural. You got a laugh on the help but don’t cover your face. Make sure to stay open when you talk to the king.

Dani and Piper – Loved your stage business in scene 1. During that initial dialogue with Begeloits you are doing this weird box step thing – stay planted. Also in this scene, when Begloits yells “Stop it! For crying out loud. Kill the Queen!” there should be a beat before Dani’s line and when she says “But Pip” it should seem like you are actually going to listen to Begloits and then you get back on father returning.

Louie – Remember to gasp when you have the first jump scare with Begeloits. Be careful not to go on autopilot with the first lines in scene 9 when you are talking to Begeloits. Make sure you have a bigger reaction to Alyssa because that is what will help sell the funny. You did an amazing job with the eyes in scene 10!

Averie – Can we get you up at the beginning of this scene and have you fall into the throne similar to scene 8? This would help you not be locked into the throne (Kabes will be looking for this). Remember that you should be hysterical until “Alright what is this proclamation?” You really aren’t listening to Savina at all. You are trying to command all the attention. In scene 8 when you are talking about the ball and then you daughter arrives – envision her!

Savina – slow down your first monologue at the end of scene 2. Pauses are your friends. In scene 8, be more upset/angry that a princess has shown up. We should see your frustration on your face from the time the Queen makes that revelation. Get a pose for “My time will come. It will come.” Do not put your hands up for the guards to drag you off. They should grab for you, not the other way around.

Alyssa – if you forget to plug your ears, don’t try to do it later. You can also wait to hit the button on Begeloits until you go to turn her. Wait to give Begeloits the knife until you hear Scrooge. You could even look at it, panic, and then put it in her hand as you turn to address him.

Zach – make that run off even more goofy. Stay at the house until the blackout.

Grant – stay open, your pace was good in your first scene but I really want you to be even more disgusted with them. Make sure we get this “reformed” personality in scene 9. Really come off a sincere. Slowing down will help. We did lose the last part of your line when you were shot. Don’t grab you hat.

Hannah – really be creepy. Creepy is the vibe, the first few lines can be a whisper but don’t be afraid to grow in volume, especially when you are mad at the girls. Get angry. Work on a big evil laugh, esp. with the death of the Queen.

Brody – we liked when you sounded confuse on announcing King Bimbles. Keep that. Also, make sure you look at Louie when you ask what his first royal decree is.

EVERYONE: Make sure to stay in the light – a lot of this was the stage and where the lights were zoned, just be aware. You all did a nice job pulling each other back into the light.
